Finding Morels in Northern Michigan

Each May mushroom lovers everywhere hit the woods in search for the elusive morel mushroom!

Here are a few tips on increasing your basket with these tasty delicacies.

1) Weather Conditions

Keep an eye on the temparature outside. Morels will start popping when the temp starts to get around 60 degrees and above during the day and no colder than 40 degrees at night.

2) Slope of the hill

The side of the hill that gets the most sun is where the moresl will starting popping up first.

3) Know your trees and undisturbed ground

Morels like to hang around Elm, ash and poplar trees, and around old apple orchards. Look for dead and dying trees as well and around old logging and burn sites.

4) After the rain

Nothing better than going hunting after a warm spring rain if the temparatures are right!

5) Have FUN

Half the fun is walking around the woods soaking up nature. So pack a lunch and spend the day outside and good luck finding those tasty treasures!
